A City Within A City: China Town

China Town in Liverpool, established in the 1800s, was the first of its kind in Europe. It arose to provide accommodation for Chinese seamen on shore leave. Since, thousands of Chinese settlers have found home in this area of Liverpool’s city. Due to the growth of the Chinese community, China Town is now home to many shops and restaurants which provides a wealth of culture for those who visit.

The most popular event within Liverpool’s China Town is the Chinese New Year celebration. Liverpool Chinese community groups team up with other organisations to celebrate the New Year through art and cultural events. Taking place in February, the celebration engages all cultures in an enthusiastic burst of Chinese culture which is a unique experience not to be missed while you’re living in Liverpool.

Additionally, ‘A city within a city’ is the name of the new regeneration project of the existing China Town. New China Town is being designed to incorporate the existing traditional, urban setting with more modern architectural concepts to create a fuller representation of Chinese culture.
